Buccal films are novel dosage forms that present unique advantages. In vitro release testing plays a key role in the developmental phase of formulation candidates. Currently, there is a lack of meaningful in vitro platforms that can reliably predict the in vivo performance of buccal films. In vitro release assays can be useful in identifying promising formulation prototypes, and evaluating inter-batch variations in quality. Here, we aim to develop a new technical setup for the testing of buccal film candidates. One that is biopredictive and able to reliably predict in vivo pharmacokinetics and establish in vitro-in vivo correlations.
